Publication Schedule Update

Dear Readers: Yes, I know, my Allyson James books have been delayed a bit. Apologies for not updating the website, but I've been so busy writing!!

I'm experiencing a slight delay due to life and books taking longer to write than I'd planned. When I say "delay," I'm talking a few weeks to a month, not years! What is coming down the pipeline is still coming down the pipeline--the pipeline just got blocked a little.

So we have:

Justin (Tales of the Shareem): Coming Feb 20. (Right now it's in edits). I will make a huge, blaring announcement when it's out!

Nightwalker (Stormwalker Book 4): Has now moved to mid or late March.

Everything else is pretty much on track (Duke's Perfect Wife as Jennifer Ashley in April, more Shifters after that).

I'd rather take a few more weeks to make the books the best I can make them than have them dumped on you before they're ready. I'm also happy to have understanding editors! :-)

I plan at least one more Shareem after Justin (Judith's story and wrapping up some threads...though who knows?)

The Stormwalker series at this point is open-ended. I love the world, Janet, Mick, Colby, Coyote...

High Time for Some Updates

Apologies for keeping this blog hanging--the Jennifer Ashley and Ashley Gardner side of my kind of stuck Allyson James in a closet and told her to stay there a while. But, Allyson is not sitting idly in the dark.

I am working on two books: Justin (next in the Tales of the Shareem), and Nightwalker (next in the Stormwalker series). I have pub dates on neither yet, but I'd say sometime in the next six months.

As soon as my immediate workload calms a little (ha!) I'm going to head up to the Navajo Nation for more research on the Stormwalker books. I hope to make it out to Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, and I hope the heat has lessened by trip time!

I recently flew over Janet's territory when I came back from RomCon in Denver. Always liking to check my research I gazed down at the desert plateau, and said, "Yep, that's just how I described it." I imagined the lone hotel standing there near the deep canyon crevices, the two little towns to either side of it, and a coyote running around, snickering.

I'll update more when I have covers, blurbs, and dates for the next books.

Two Stormwalker Series Releases Today!!!

Yay! They're here! SHADOW WALKER releases today, along with the HEXED anthology, which contains a Janet and Mick story: "Double Hexed."

In "Double Hexed," Janet and friends are locked into the hotel by a nasty hex, and even Coyote can't get them out of it.

Shadow Walker is a full-length book--Mick is acting strangely, the Magic Mirror is afraid of him, and Janet's grandmother comes down from the Dine Nation and moves in to the hotel. Characters you met in Firewalker (Cassandra, Colby, Gabrielle) return.

This is the second time this series has gotten the nod. "A Little Night Magic," in Hot for the Holidays (Jamison and Naomi's story) was nominated last year in the Novella category.

December updates

I apologize for not updating anything here for a while--we had a death in the family and the last month has been pretty hectic and sad. That said, a couple of things are going on:

1. I sent Tales of the Shareem: Braden to my editor. She still has to accept it, but if she does, EC has a fairly short turnaround, so we should see that out in a couple of months (so cross your fingers she likes it). (It's a novel-length book.)

2. Pending approval, of course, I introduce a new Shareem--Justin--in Braden's book. His story will be next!

3. Thanks for all the emails and posts about FIREWALKER. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it. SHADOW WALKER is next, out in June, as well as the novella in HEXED.

And finally, Janet Begay, the star of the show.

Janet's had a rough start to life, being motherless, a bad thing to be in a matriarchical society. Because no one knows who Janet's mother's people or clans were, they don't trust her much. Of course, Janet's mother is a goddess from Beneath, and the evil she's invested in Janet is pretty powerful.

Janet's dad, on the other hand, is a sweet guy who was seduced by the goddess. He raised Janet on his own, with the help of Janet's formidable grandmother (who can become a Crow).

Janet is a Stormwalker, which means she can draw power from nearby storms and use it to work amazing magic. When it's storming, nothing can stop her. When it's not storming--good thing she has Mick. Her power manifested when she was a kid, and it terrified her. With the help of Jamison Kee and Mick, Janet has been able to hone her power to a controlled weapon.

But now, another power is rising within her, and she's not sure that she'll ever get that one under control. (More about this in FIREWALKER and SHADOW WALKER.)

Maya Madina, a black-haired, dark-eyed Latina who grew up in Magellan, is one of the few non-magical characters in the Stormwalker series. She's kind of a foil for Janet--Maya is smart, good at her job (Janet's electrician), sassy as hell, doesn't take crap from anyone, and the only person not the least bit afraid of Janet.

In Maya, Janet finds a friend, though their friendship gets off to a rocky start. Maya is slow to trust, but once she likes you, she's loyal to the end.

Maya's madly in love with Sheriff Nash Jones. Their affair is rocky, but Maya's determine to work through it, and prove to Jones that he loves her back.

Maya held out her hand. “Come with me. We’re going to get you dinner.”
“I can’t,” I said.
“I’m not going to bring you a tray. Your cook is a scary b*tch, and I don’t want to interrupt her when she’s anywhere near her knives.”

The question of the day: Secondary romances (i.e., a romance between secondary characters that's not the focus of the book). Like them? Think they take away from the main story? Won't read a book without them? What'dya think?

I've gotten more email about the magic mirror than any other character! It has the voice of a drag queen and a fixation on sex. It's snarky and loud, with a penchant for bursting into show tunes in the middle of the night. But since it’s saved the day on more than one occasion, Janet lets it live.

Magic mirrors hold incredible magic. They can communicate over any distance with other magic mirrors, and non-magical ones if they can attune to them. They can enhance spells, seek information, and are utterly bound to the mage in whose power it's in at the moment.

Nash is a complicated guy. He’s a tortured ex-special forces officer, now sheriff of Hopi County, a stickler for the rules and fights PTSD. He grew up a staunch Unbeliever (one who doesn't buy into the "woo-woo" tourism of his little town), but now knows that he houses incredible magic.

Nash is a “null,” a person who can absorb and negate magic, even magic of the gods. No one knows how he got that way or what he can do.

He’s fiercely protective of his territory (which would be the whole county), and doesn’t trust crazy people like Janet and Coyote. But sometimes he’s their greatest asset, and he also knows that sometimes, he needs their help.

From FIREWALKER:
“So, educate me,” Nash said. “There are Stormwalkers like you; Nightwalkers, which are vampires; and then skinwalkers, those creatures I fought out at the vortexes. What are werewolves—dogwalkers?”

I had conflicting opinions about Nash--some people really liked him; others didn't. I like him because he has many layers, which I peel away as the series goes. How do you feel about characters that you might not like at first? Do they grow on you? Or do you want to fall in love right away?

Musings on True Blood's Color Schemes

I've faithfully watched all episodes of all seasons of TB thus far, and as I watched the latest episode, I got to thinking about color. It might just be HBO's broadcast, or my television, but TB has a black-and-white feel, with touches of color to emphasize certain characters or to play with viewer emotion.

For example, the vampires mostly wear black, white, silver, and shades of gray, with the few touches of color in their clothes or settings being red. See the pic of Eric here (with Pam? or the queen? behind him) to see what I mean. Likewise Fangtasia has a black, white, and red theme. "Behind the scenes" of Fangtasia everything is gray, beige--bland industrial colors, which contrasts "reality" with the image Eric wants to project in the bar itself.

Bill's house is mostly shades of faded gray and cream (I so long to go in there with a paint roller) and always dim, night or day.

The richest colors in the whole show are in Merlotte's bar. There you get warmth mostly from wood, plus the oranges and yellows of the decor. Sam always wears soft clothes--paid shirts and jeans. In fact, everything about Sam is soft and warm (mmm hmm).

Sookie's house is full of creams and light colors, almost like sweetness and light. The most colorful abode of all is Lafayette's, and it's no accident that he is a colorful, vibrant character (and gets the best lines).

Anyone else notice things like this? (Or care, LOL?)

Color and tone can make us perceive emotion when it's not there (or enhance emotion that is). Cold, fearful, angry, tense, warm, happy. I like that the creators of the show took the time on such detail.

(And I enjoy the excuse to post pictures of Eric and Sam.)

I've been so juiced about STORMWALKER and the great reader response to it (Thank You!) that I haven't talked about my JUNE release!

"Mortal Sensations" is loosely connected to the Mortal series (I mention previous characters in the wedding scene, but it's a standalone story.)

I've been enjoying the werewolf series by Bonnie Vanak pubbed by Silhouette Nocturne (The Empath, Enemy Lover, and her Oct. release, Immortal Wolf). Hot shifters, cool magic, heroines in distress--oh yeah.

I started to get interested in a character called Indigo, a half vampire, half werewolf who's become part of the pack and is a tattoo artist. He's tasty!

I asked Bonnie if he would get his own story, and sure enough, he is--and it's FREE!

Starting today, you can read Indigo's tale: Seducing the Vampire at eHarlequin. One chapter a week.

Sweat dripped down his temples as the tattoo gun whirred. He adjusted the gooseneck lamp and ignored his rising hunger. Indigo hadn’t taken blood in a full century. Dining on his adopted brother was not a good way to start.

“Ow, that hurts,” Gabriel Robichaux pretended to whine.

“Shut up and take it like a man,” asserted Raphael Robichaux.

“I’m a wolf, not a man,” Gabriel shot back.

“Move any more, and you’ll be a wolf with a crooked heart,” Indigo warned. “I told you to ease off the beer. Now you’re bleeding on me.”

The cool news is that Hot for the Holidays made USA Today at #50 and the New York Times list at #15! (That list will be published in the 10/18 edition of the NYT).

RAW!

I got back from Lora Leigh's Reader Appreciation Weekend (RAW) last Monday, but I've been crashing on getting a ms. done, plus I caught a cold (darn it), so I'm just now getting around to talking about....

How much fun it was!!!!

RAW is a smaller reader conference (about 250 people), but it focusses entirely on the reader. There are no writer's workshops, no panel discussions, nothin' like that. Readers party with their friends and buy books.

For me the writer, it was a great chance to catch up with my writer friends, meet readers, dance, and oh, yeah, buy books. (Not good enough for me that there was a ton of romances to buy at RAW, I had to walk across the street to another bookstore and stock up on mysteries and scifi fantasy as well. I am ill.)

I believe the next RAW will be in the same place (Huntington, WV), around the same time (September), but keep an eye out for details.

More Releases, or High Time for a New Post

I really should post something new! First, thank you to all of the readers who emailed me about Calder. I am happy to hear you liked his story! I turned in a short story about Eland (a Shareem who popped up briefly in Aiden & Ky), and I'm working on Braden's.

News: I'm working on overhauling my website with new graphics, info on new series, and other cool stuff. Please bear with me the next few weeks while I get it up and running. I'll try to make the transition painless.

I'll be at Lora Leigh's RAW this weekend, signing books! The bookseller has ordered a ton of my books both as Allyson James and Jennifer Ashley, so there should be plenty to choose from. She should have my two October releases as well: Hot for the Holidays (as Allyson James), and A Christmas Ball, as Jennifer Ashley.

Actually, I think all of the Hot for the Holidays authors will be at RAW, so it's a chance to have it autographed by everyone!

As Jennifer Ashley, I was asked to contribute a short story to Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance II, which hits the shelves today! I was reading the editor's introduction in the book (which I hadn't seen before), and she explains why vampire romance can be really dark. So what did I write? A light and funny vamp story! LOL! Ah, well, it should provide for some comic relief. It really is silly, but romantic and fun.

Basically (if you're not familiar with the series), Shareem are men genetically bred to be pleasure givers. They were made in a factory called DNAmo, then the making of them was outlawed, and they're only accepted in society as second-class citizens. Poor guys. Not that they don't have any fun. :-)

This series launched my ero-tic romance career, and I'm very, very fond of the Shareem. Writing them is like being with old friends.

Mortal Temptations Giveaway and Excerpts

I'm excited that it's 15 days from the official release date of Mortal Seductions. (Insert confetti throwing here. *g*)

The Mystic Realm is holding a contest until AUGUST 31 for a free, signed copy of Mortal Temptations (book 1 in the "Mortal" series).

Do you have to read Mortal Temptations first? Not necessarily. Demitri, the hero of Mortal Seductions makes an appearance in Mortal Temptations to help out the heroes in that book, and you learn he's a tiger shapeshifter. I just saw via Twitter that The Dragon Master won First Place in the PRISM at RWA National. Woo!! And I'm not there, so I couldn't scream in person. Life (or at least, my life).

Also, Immortals: The Redeeming (by me as Jennifer Ashley) took second in dark fantasy. Not as good as first, but I'm not complaining all that much! :-)

I managed to replace the hard drive on the laptop (it was under warranty, TG), so...I was able to finish the edits/revisions on Calder and turn that back around to my editor at EC.

Now I'm working on revisions to Pride Mates, the sexy shapeshifter romance I'm doing for Dorchester as Jennifer Ashley. Yummy Irish guys who live in Austin and change to wildcats. Really.

I think the Stormwalker series is cursed....

I turned in the manuscript of Stormwalker this morning. Yesterday, as I was proofing and putting in corrections, my laptop CRASHED. Big time.

Second laptop in about five months.

The first one crashed while I was working on revisions of the novella that prequels the Stormwalker book. Both stories are set in the same world. Coincidence??

Or have I pissed off skinwalkers? (who are heavies in the stories). They say that talking about them lightly can bring their attention. Hmmmm.

On my laptop, the OS (Windows Vista) refuses to load. I've been able to run diagnostics through DOS, which indicates that a tiny portion of the hard drive has corrupted (or something--the tests fail at that point and won't continue). I can't even make it restore factory settings.

Big heavy sigh.

I need to start a new manuscript so must either get laptop repaired (it's under warranty; hope the problem is a covered one), or get new laptop. My dh says it's because I write so fast, I burn it out. Sweeetie.

At least I obsessively back up, and I lost only a few hours of work. I might have lost part of the novella I need to work on next, though, and notes for the sequel to Madness of Lord Ian. So my life goes...

I need smudge sticks, candles, crystals, prayer...

FIRST, Yes, my EC editor loved Calder, and his book is a go! So Tales of the Shareem: Calder will be out at Ellora's Cave, as soon as we go through the revision/editing/proofring/publishing process. I'll post when I know a pub date. (If you don't know who Calder is, he shows up for the first time in Tales of the Shareem: Aiden & Ky.)

SECOND, My editor at Berkley asked me to contribute a novella to a HEAT anthology (more erotic romance!). I have no other details about this yet (like title, pub. date), but I'll let you know. It will be out next year, and I'll tie it to my Mortal Temptations/Mortal Seductions series.

RAW 2009

I am proud of myself. I finally made my hotel reservation for RAW 2009! It's the first year I've been invited, and I'm so looking forward to it.

RAW (Reader Appreciation Weekend) is a reader/fan conference put on by Lora Leigh with the help of her cronies as a place readers can gather, get autographed books, and have fun.

I will be there this year (look for me under the name Jennifer Ashley if you can't find Allyson James).

If you can't make it to some of the bigger reader conferences, RAW is a nice (and less expensive) alternative. It's in Huntington, WV, the last weekend of September. Hope to see some of my readers there!

I finished and turned in a short story for the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance II. Woo!

Immortals: The Reckoning (me writing as Jennifer Ashley) came out. I saw it in Target. Woo!!

I just finished a novella for a Christmas anthology coming out in October. Woo!!

Mortal Seductions and Hot for the Holidays (one of the Xmas anthos) are orderable at Amazon. Woo!!

Facing me are copyedits of Mortal Seductions, the first draft of Pride Mates (new paranormal series), and the first draft of Stormwalker (new urban fantasy).

But I think I'll take the weekend off.

If you enjoyed Mortal Temptations (and even if you didn't), the next book, Mortal Seductions, is due out in September. My editor just read it and said it was even better than Mortal Temptations. And I agree; Mortal Temps was the warm-up. :-)

Dragon questions

I've had a lot of questions regarding the Dragon series (Dragon Heat; Black Dragon; Dragon Master); e.g., is it the end?

I'd always intended the series to be a trilogy--and in fact Berkley bought the third book well after the first two (waiting to see how the first book did, possibly...which is why the year between Black Dragon and Dragon Master.)

I'd originally sold Berkley four books, two Dragons and two Heats--Mortal Temps and Mortal Seductions, which are both releasing this year.

(BTW, In case anyone finds this stuff interesting, I wrote Mortal Temptations before I wrote Dragon Master, but they were published in reverse order. )

What I'm working on now for Berkley is a brand new series that will debut in 2010. It's more urban fantasy, but with romance. You'll get a glimpse of it in the Christmas anthology, Hot for the Holidays, coming out in October.

For the dragons: I never say never. I might get the opportunity to do another one, and I wouldn't say no! For now, there aren't any scheduled.

Everything I post on my website is what's contracted and in progress, so if it's not there with at least a TBA date, then I don't have a contract for it. As soon as I make a sale, I post the book title and possible date.

(Which reminds me, I just made a Jennifer Ashley sale to Dorchester, and need to post that too!!)

I heard this book is doing well on the sales front. But I have such a ball writing these erotic romances that I stop worrying about sales and reviews and so forth. I immerse myself in the fun, sexy world with lots of humor and sensuality, and just go for it. If you liked my Tales of the Shareem series at Ellora's Cave, you'll likely enjoy Mortal Temptations.

Demitri's story, Mortal Seductions, will be out in September. More about that after my editor reads it, LOL.

(BTW, if you're not an erotic romance fan, rest assured I will be back to mainstreamy paranormal/urban fantasy after that. I like to move between subgenres to keep myself fresh.)
